Rowan’s spectacularly cruel revenge in Coronation Street as a life is declared ‘over’

The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Coronation Street that hasn’t aired on ITV yet, but is available to view on ITVX.

Cult leader Rowan Cunliffe (Emryhs Cooper) has backed Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) and Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) into a corner in Coronation Street.

Ultimately, Rowan’s aim over the past few weeks has been to isolate Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) from her family and draw her further into The Institute, a group that she believes is all about self-help.

Two people desperately trying to make Leanne see sense are Nick and Toyah. They know Rowan leads a corrupt organisation and whenever he grows angry at their interference, he develops a plan to push them away.

In Tuesday’s (June 18) episode of the ITV soap, it was the day of Rose’s funeral.

In the morning, Leanne revealed to Toyah that she had spoken to George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) about giving Rose – her daughter – a pricier funeral.

Toyah was completely taken aback but sadly, she then learnt Leanne didn’t pay for the expensive funeral package at all – Rowan did.

This development absolutely horrified Toyah. As she broke down, she told Leanne that whenever she visits Rose’s grave now, she will be constantly reminded of Rowan.

Leanne defended the evil businessman and said it was a gift, but Toyah said as far as she’s concerned, this move has ended their relationship for good.

Later that day, Toyah found Nick on his own in the flat. As they connected again, the in-laws shared a kiss, but remained unaware they were being watched by a man from the builders yard.Toyah Battersby shouts at Rowan Cunliffe when he shows up at her baby's funeral in Coronation Street

While the lines were blurring between Toyah and Nick, we saw Rowan meeting that same man who saw them kissing.

Rowan smirked when he saw the photograph – this was perfect ammunition to try and control Toyah.

That evening, after Toyah and Nick agreed sleeping together shouldn’t happen again (well duh), she was seen in the Bistro being confronted by Rowan.

As topic of conversation turned to their case going to trial, Toyah seemed confident she would end up winning and wouldn’t be ‘outplayed again’, but Rowan thought otherwise.

Back at the flat, Toyah received a text from an unknown number with the picture of her kissing Nick.

Convinced Rowan was responsible, Toyah worried about what would come next, while Nick said that if the horrible man sends the image to Leanne, his entire life will be over.
