FOOTY FRENZY EastEnders fans confused as Walford celebrates Gareth Southgate’s England team – despite crushing reality of Euro 2024

EASTENDERS viewers have been left confused after scenes showed jubilant football fans in Walford – despite the outcome of England’s latest game.

The national side managed by Gareth Southgate faced off against Slovenia on the evening of Tuesday, June 25.

Scenes already shown on BBC iPlayer give an insight into Walford’s atmosphere during the football match.

At the Queen Vic, Harvey Monroe (Ross Boatman) was seen leading a sing song of Whole Again, the Southgate version, before kick-off.

Episode writer Sharon Marshall revealed ahead of time that the scene would leave her embarrassed unless England won.

She said on X, formerly Twitter: “I really need us to win, or there’s a scene in tomorrow’s EastEnders that’ll leave me looking a right [b*****d].

His partner Jean was among the fellow residents joining in on the sing-song
“Thank you Southgate. If you could.. we believe.. #englandeuro2024.”

She added: “We need to all be chanting we love Southgate, or I’m doomed.”

Sadly, the game against Slovenia ended as a zero scoring draw, while the disappointing performance left fans feeling quite different to what they saw on screen.

Viewers who watched the episode on iPlayer were left confused by the scenes that played out.

One wrote: “A crowd of football fans in the Vic singing a football version of Whole Again. What kind of fresh hell is this.”

A second added: “Could have done without the cringeworthy scene of the lads in the pub singing at the football.”

Another added: “Just watched it on iPlayer and was a bit confused.”

A fourth commented: “That scene gave me a good laugh on the iPlayer upload.”

It comes as football fan Harvey has bonded with newcomer Maya Houssain (Bharti Patel) over their shared love of the game.

Maya was present during Harvey’s enthusiastic sing-song at the pub, as well as his partner Jean and other excited Walford residents.

EastEnders facts and figures

Sleuthing viewers have speculated that Maya has had an ulterior motive for befriending Harvey, who has been on the show since 2021.

The theory links back to his son Aaron Monroe (Charlie Wernham), who assaulted a taxi driver named Mr Houssain – with fans left wondering if he has any link to Maya due to their shared surname.
