Casualty’s Rash Masum hints at exit after heartbreaking mental health struggles

Casualty’s Rash Masum left his colleagues devastated after “struggling” for several weeks.

The emergency department doctor has been struggling with the unexpected death of his dad Ashok has been left tortured following a relentless campaign by his boss, Patrick Onley. In recent weeks, Onley has targetted Rash, believing that he is the notorious whistleblower who gave footage of the run-down department to a TV company.

Despite Rash’s best efforts to persuade Patrick that he isn’t, the latest episode of the BBC medical drama opened up about the effects Patrick’s bullying has had on him since the TV show aired, exposing the department.

In one scene, Rash (Neet Mohan) confronted Patrick (Jamie Glover) in his office, saying: “You were right, I told them everything, I’m the whistleblower.” A relieved Patrick responded: “Finally, it’s not just me you lied to, it’s them, what are they going to say? You made them look incompetent, how do you think they’re going to feel? Having to work with someone who treated them like that.” In the exposé, staff at the department were seen attempting to care for patients while being completely overrun.

Rash Masum attempted his own life following weeks of struggling
But Rash later hands his notice in and faces a brutal response from Onley. As he prepares to carry out his final task, he was humiliated by his soon-to-be former boss, who said: “Dr Massam, I thought we agreed effective immediately?” But as Rash attempted to continue, Patrick instructs security to remove him from the premises, leaving his colleagues stunned as he “confessed” to being the whistleblower.Rash was rushed to intensive care where he was recovering after his heart stopped beating

As Rash’s colleagues, including cousin Tariq Hussein (Manpreet Bachu) struggled to get in touch with Rash after he headed home, they were faced with heartache. In emotional scenes, Rash was seen placing a suicide note in his bedroom door before saying goodbye to his beloved parents.

Clinical lead Patrick Onley believed Rash was the whistleblower
Upon entering their shared home, Tariq discovered Rash surrounded by his own vomit after suffering an overdose in a bid to take his own life. Things soon deteriorated as Rash went into ventricular fibrillation, meaning his heartbeat became irregular. However, his heart later stopped, with paramedic Iain rushing him to his former workplace.

However, nurse Rida Amaan (Sarah Seggari) was left overcome with emotion after seeing Rash, knowing that she was in fact the real whistleblower. Having confessed to her colleague Jodie, she insisted on telling the truth to Patrick, exclaiming: “It wasn’t rash, I’m the whistleblower, I have proof, I have emails between myself and the television company.”

“Are you looking to be suspended? Because this would be the excellent way,” said a smug Patrick. But Rida was left stunned when her colleagues, including boss Siobhan, Dr Dylan Keogh and Dr Stevie Nash all claimed to be the whistleblower in an act of solidarity. Unbeknownst to Patrick, who is left feeling overwhelmed with guilt, Rash was recovering well in the intensive care unit.

“It’s not your fault, Patrick,” said Dylan, adding: “Whatever decision Rash made, he didn’t make it because of you, he didn’t make it for one reason, it never is just one reason. That said, I’m not sure this is the best place for you.”
