Stevie and the team are in a self-defence class led by Harry, as part of the ED’s new zero tolerance policy.

As Harry goes through the moves, he is called to one side by a police officer, who has bad news for Stevie: Ray McKenna, the man who assaulted Ryan, has absconded after his mother’s funeral.

Stevie is frozen by this and is reminded of Ray’s sinister final message to her.

Stevie is so shaken up by the news that Max agrees to let her have the rest of the day off.

2. Dylan struggles with his insecurities

Dylan gets defensive over his feelings for Donna when he has to tell Max that she’s been asking after him.

When Max enquires back about Donna’s welfare, Dylan is palpably unsettled.

Max wants to let bygones be bygones but Dylan is rattled by the situation.

3. Stevie tries to put her fears aside

Stevie’s anxiety rises when she treats a cagey Kofi, who has taken drugs and doesn’t want police involved in his attack.

Stevie is suspicious and investigates further, finding scratches on his neck, which she is concerned could be signs of strangulation.

She gains his trust enough to allow her to examine him and discovers that the bruising is severe. This leads Stevie to realise that Kofi has been sexually assaulted.

Stevie then decides to stay the rest of her shift regardless of her fears about Ray – her patients need her.

4. Jodie makes a discovery

Dylan and Jodie treat a young boy called Mackenzie, who has swallowed something while under the supervision of his uninterested sister Lauren.

Dylan gets frustrated when Lauren is more interested in her phone than her brother’s welfare.

Jodie diffuses the situation, telling him that Lauren is just a typical teenager. In doing so, this exposes Dylan’s need for a companion.

5. Rash worries about his new arrangement

It’s Rida’s first day caring for Ashok, and Rash is cautious about adhering to his routine.

Rida confidently assures Rash that she can manage, but Rash becomes concerned after hearing of her irresponsible habits from Jodie.

Rash thinks that his fears have been confirmed when he gets a phone call from his confused dad later on.

6. Stevie’s anxiety intensifies

Having decided to face her fears and stay on at work, Stevie’s confidence is knocked when a drunken patient accosts her.

She retreats to the bathroom, frustrated by how much the situation has shaken her.

As Stevie composes herself, Ray walks in and ambushes her. Stevie does the right thing by staying calm and putting on her body cam – but is palpably terrified.

Ray is apologetic at first but his patience runs out when discussing the charges he faces over Ryan’s attack.

Thankfully, the moment is diffused by Harry, but Stevie is left further traumatised by the incident.

7. Max’s health takes another worrying turn

Max and Dylan have to put their personal grievances aside to help Mackenzie, who, it transpires, has swallowed a battery from his toy dinosaur.

Max surprises everyone with his kindness towards the youngster but the effort takes a toll on his health.

When Max is injured by a patient, he struggles to recover. The team all witness this, as Max begs Cam to help him up.

8. Dylan and Jodie join forces

Dylan and Jodie both realise that they each know Max’s secret.

Jodie tries to persuade Dylan to talk to Max, and they eventually decide to approach the situation together.

As Max hides in his office with painkillers, Jodie and Dylan enter. Dylan gets tough with Max, insisting that he can’t keep going on like he’s doing or he will die.

Jodie gives Max options, explaining that she has registered as a donor. Despite Max’s reluctance about this, Dylan insists that he needs to act now or suffer the consequences.

9. Stevie gets a major offer

At the end of another difficult shift, Cam tells Stevie that Max wants to see her in his office.

Stevie is thrown when Max tells her that he is stepping down and wants her to be clinical lead in his absence.

With a new-found drive following the day she’s had, Stevie accepts.

10. Rida surprises Rash
