Paying tribute to Kevin Costner’s many ‘Yellowstone’ jackets

Yellowstone, Taylor Sheridan’s new drama on the Paramount Network, is a show about jackets. Okay, that’s not it. It’s a movie about a family and its patriarchy, a miserable man played by Kevin Costner who will go to any length to protect the kingdom he has built, a page giant camp called Yellowstone. (Yellowstone—the show and the ranch—is set in Montana, not Wyoming, where most of Yellowstone is actually located. Why would anyone introduce this unnecessary bit of confusion into their business or television show? I can’t believe their pictures.) It’s a show. about family, decadence and power; it was a program of government subjugation of Native Americans; this is also clearly a show about dragging Kelly Reilly into another thankless role.

But it should be a coat show. Because no matter how many negative things you can say about Yellowstone—it’s cliché, it’s performative, it’s a not-so-good Successor with cowboy boots—you can’t deny that Kevin Costner wore Some freaky boss jacket in there. In short, Yellowstone is borderline jacket porn (perhaps just regular porn for Justin Timberlake), and across three episodes, Costner has donned time-stained blazers and hard work, the type of vest that inspired the entire Eddie Bauer catalog, and the incredible two-tone jackets that will make you want to ditch the family and become a rancher. My pitch for Season 2 of Yellowstone is “Less dialogue, less murder — more coats,” because the show is truly at its best when Kevin Costner is just standing in front of a mountain among horses , looking rugged in a cool jacket. To celebrate those highlights, here’s a gallery of every single coat Costner has worn on the show so far. Note: This is the first scene of the show. Costner’s character, John Dutton, and the horse he’s pulling have just been in a car accident, and if you’re wondering whether the horse will survive, you haven’t been paying attention to the gun in his left hand. by Costner. And if you’re wondering now if there’s a close-up shot of Kevin Costner shooting a horse in the head, my answer is you’re sick… but maybe you’ll like Yellowstone.

This is just the most ridiculous way to start a TV show of all time — and a really good microcosm for Yellowstone in general. A great man named Michael Bay once said on the 1999 Armageddon DVD commentary, “You never kill a dog; as a filmmaker, you have to learn that,” and I wanted to add horses to this rule and bring Taylor Sheridan’s attention to it. However, the vest is quite decent.
